How To Drill Through A File

Drilling through a file is an important skill to have when you are in the field. Whether you are doing this for work or personal reasons, it’s always good to know how to do it without any help. Take a look at these instructions, and learn how easy drilling through a file can be!

Step One: Gather all you need

You need to get all your materials, tools, and files that need to be drilled together. This will make drilling easier. Here are the basic things you need:

  • Drill
  • Flat File or Metal file
  • Rubber Drill Chuck to hold the drill bit in place while drilling

Step Two: Mark the spot

Take your drill bit and mark where you want to drill through on file with a pen or pencil (Do not use a permanent marker). You can also find some lines already on the file. Drill straight down into the file.

Step Three: Start Drilling!

Take your drill and follow the line or just drill straight down through the file until you see a big hole in it. Sit back, relax and enjoy knowing you drilled right on target! There is no need to go too deep into the file if there is not enough room for whatever needs drilling (like a screw).

Step Four: Clean It Up

After you are done drilling, clean up any remaining metal shavings with some sandpaper or even the file itself. Just make sure to get all of it off so there aren’t sharp edges that can harm you or others! Make sure all dust is gone before using the drilled product.

Step Five: Enjoy!

Now that you have drilled through your file use it as needed. You can now attach screws into the holes or just do whatever else with it. Just make sure to keep a good eye on all of the sharp edges and smooth out any rough spots so they aren’t too dangerous for people around them! Remember to drill safely, and you will have a great time!

Step Six: Repeat the process as needed.

The more files you do, the better your skills get at drilling through them, so keep practicing! Drill one file today for a good start on your practice drills. You can even use this technique with other metal sheets or objects that need some holes.

Remember to follow this simple and easy process, and you will have a drill-through file in no time! You can also check our post about drilling a number plate without making any damage to it and how to slow down a drill press for more information.
