How to Straighten Paint Brush Bristles

There are many ways to straighten paintbrush bristles, so here are 6 of the best methods on how to straighten paint brush bristles!

Paint brushes are an essential tool for any painter or artist. If you’re like me, then you probably have a brush that has lost its bristles to time and use.

How to Straighten Paint Brush Bristles

Method 1: Boil the Brush

The first method that can be used to straighten paint brush bristles is boiling the brush. Boil a pot of water and place the brush in it, making sure that all of the bristles are submerged. Let the brush soak for about 15 minutes before taking it out and rinsing with cold water. The bristles should now be straighter than before.

Method 2: Use a Hair Straightener

If you have a hair straightener, this can also be used to straighten paint brush bristles. Turn on the hair straightener and wait until it’s hot enough. Place the bristles of the brush in between the two plates of the hair straightener and hold for about five seconds.

Remove heat and test to see if they are straight. If not, go back and repeat the process again until they are completely straight.

Method 3: Use a Curling Iron

A curling iron can also be used to fix paint brush bristles that aren’t as desired after use. Turn on your hair straightener and wait for it to heat up enough so you won’t burn yourself (about 350 degrees Fahrenheit).

Carefully place the paint brush handle between two plates of the hair straighter; make sure none of its bristle touches them or else this method will not work. Hold in position for about five seconds before removing quickly from the plate and releasing the grip on the handle. The bristles should now be much straighter than before!

Method 4: Use Hot Water

Another simple method to straighten paint brush bristles is by using hot water. Let the bristles of the brush soak in a cup full of hot water for about 15 minutes before removing and rinsing with cold water. The heat from the warm should help remove any bends that may have occurred during your painting session!

Method 5: Use Heat Tape or Copper Wire

Lastly, another way to fix bent out of shape paint brushes is through heat tape and copper wire. Cut either one into tiny pieces so they can fit inside each bristle on the outside area (they will not go all the way down). Straighten them as much as possible once inserted inside until you feel like they are nice and flat (you don’t want it too tight).

Now, heat up the copper wire until it becomes red hot using a lighter or matches. Quickly place it on top of the heat tape and hold for about five seconds. Remove and let cool; test to see if bristles are straighter. If not, repeat the same steps until they are completely aligned!

Method 6: Use a Toothbrush

The last method that can be used is through the use of a toothbrush. This will require some elbow grease but should do the trick in straightening out those pesky paint brush bristles. Take an old toothbrush and dip it into hot water (not boiling). Rub the bristles against each other vigorously. Rinse with cold water when done and the bristles should now be straighter than before.

There you have it, six different methods on how to straighten paintbrush bristles! No matter which one you choose, make sure that you are gentle with the brush so that you don’t damage any of the bristles in the process. Happy painting!
