Do you know the reasons why your plumbing pipes rattle? When most people hear this noise, they often think that it is due to the careless handling of the pipe. However, there are many other causes for a rumbling sound coming from your pipes! Here are 8 different why do plumbing pipes rattle.
Why Do Plumbing Pipes Rattle
Reason #1: Loose Pipes
If the pipes are loose, they will move and vibrate when water flows through them. This is the most common reason for rattling pipes and is easy to fix by tightening the fittings. Turn off water and then use an adjustable wrench to tighten the fitting to fix this.
Be careful not to over-tighten as this could strip the threads. If it doesn’t stop right away, try using pipe tape or thread sealant before turning on the water again because if you don’t fix it now, your pipes may need replacement soon!
Reason #2: Corroded Water Connection
If there is a corroded copper connection in the plumbing system, such as between two copper pieces of piping – they will vibrate when running hot water through them.
The solution here is to replace any corroded connections with new ones that are made from non-corrosive materials like stainless steel or plastic (and lead-free). An easy way to test for corrosion is to drip some vinegar onto the connection. If it bubbles, then there is corroded metal present.
Reason #3: Loose Fittings on Appliances
If your dishwasher or washing machine is loose, they can cause the plumbing pipes to vibrate. To fix this, make sure all of the fittings are tight and use the plumber’s tape if necessary.
You may also need to re-level your appliances by adjusting their feet so that they are stable and don’t move around.
Reason #4: Defective Water Heater
A defective water heater can cause the entire system to shake and rattle. This is because a defective water heater will not heat the water evenly, which causes stress and movement in the plumbing system. To fix this, call a plumber and have them replace your defective water heater with a new one that works properly.
Reason #5: Uneven Heat Distribution
If an appliance such as a furnace or stove is too close to the hot water tank, it will cause uneven heat distribution which causes stress on the pipes and can result in rattling sounds.
The solution here is to move appliances further away from the hot water tank so that they don’t interfere with its ability to distribute heat evenly throughout the house.
Reason #6: High Water Pressure
High water pressure can also cause pipes and fittings (and appliances) to vibrate because of excess force pushing through every piping connection, especially if they are loose. The best way to fix this is by installing a water pressure regulator that will limit the maximum pressure that comes through the pipes.
Reason #7: Sudden Temperature Changes
If there is a sudden change in temperature, it can cause the metal plumbing pipes to expand and contract, resulting in rattling noises. One way to help prevent this from happening is by using insulation on hot water tanks and adding thermal expansion valves to your plumbing system (especially if you have copper piping).
If you already have these things installed and still hear rattling sounds, then it’s time to tune-up! Your plumber can do this by checking all of the fittings and making sure they are tight as well as inspecting all of the pipes to make sure they are not damaged.
Reason #8: Faulty Pipes
If your pipes are corroded, cracked, or have any other types of damage, they will need to be replaced. This is the only way to fix this problem when it occurs. The best thing you can do here is preventative maintenance to prevent any problems in the future!
